FLAT batteries and snowy roads did not stop St Albans Round Table from raising thousands of pounds for charity over the festive period.

Despite frequent snow storms and icy roads, the St Albans Round Table and its Santa float still managed to trundle its way around the St Albans district over the course of December, collecting a total of 6,800 for various local charities.

Round Table member Alan Whittingham said that they took a record 1,167 on Christmas Eve around St Michael's village and added: "That impressive sum was despite the many problems we had, which included a problem with the float's batteries which took several days and an engineer's visit to sort out!"

The St Albans Round Table also made 45 donations of food parcels to needy local residents over the course of their December rounds.
