Determined St Albans Remainers joined like-minded Europhiles in the recent London protest march.
About 50 members from St Albans for Europe (SAFE) met at St Albans City Station to join a national demonstration asking the Government to halt its controversial plans to leave the EU.
SAFE widely publicised the event around the district, with leaflets, a street stall, and through social media. Many of the attending activists wore t-shirts and badges especially designed for the get-together.
Members of SAFE spoke about why they feel it is a worthy cause.
Judith Leary-Joyce said: “I can’t bear what we’re doing to our beautiful grandchildren.”
Helen Campbell said: “To do nothing is to be complicit in the destruction of so many of the values that bind this country together - in this age of social media, it’s too easy to sit behind a keyboard and think that ‘liking’ a post on Facebook is protesting. It isn’t.
“Brexit threatens to be a very nasty turning point in history and I want to be able to look back and know I did what I could to stop it. I’ll keep going as long as it takes.”
Louise McElhinney added: “I marched because I don’t want to tell my children in years to come that I gave up on our country. Like one of the speakers said on the march, no one is coming to save us from Brexit.
“My mind remains unchanged. Brexit is looking just as stupid as it ever has. Let’s exit Brexit and spend our time, thought and money on more pressing national and global issues.”
Chair of SAFE, Fiona McAndrew, said Brexit is a historic mistake: “It is already leading to a price squeeze and affecting the NHS through a drop in applications from EU nurses.
“We are at a turning point where it will be the sheer weight of opposition to plans to shut the UK off from our neighbours and steer us backwards which will make the difference in determining which direction the UK goes in.”
In June last year, St Albans district bucked the national trend by voting to Remain - 37.3 per cent leave and 62.7 per cent to stay.
