More than 1,400 women went pink in the heatwave to support the fight against cancer at this year’s St Albans Race for Life.

Organisers Cancer Research UK thanked everyone who supported or took part in the annual 5k and 10k run around Verulamium Park on Sunday.

Cancer Research UK’s Hertfordshire events manager, Courtney Culverhouse, explained: “Life-saving research is being funded right now thanks to people like the women of St Albans who joined the fight at Race for Life.

“By taking part and raising money, our participants play a crucial role in helping to turn discoveries made in the lab into new, better treatments for patients in Hertfordshire and across the UK and we’d like to thank everyone who took part in the events at the weekend.”

She especially thanked all the suppliers and volunteers, including Hertfordshire 4x4 Response, St Albans Air Cadets, and St Albans Sea Cadets.

Courtney said: “The atmosphere across the weekend was hugely moving - full of emotion, courage, tears and laughter - as people came together to remember loved ones lost to cancer or celebrate the lives of those dear to them who have survived.

“Race for Life offers a unique opportunity for like-minded ladies to unite against a disease that affects us all in some way.

“Now we’re asking everyone who took part, and all the friends, family and colleagues who pledged to sponsor them, to return the money they’ve raised as soon as possible.”

It is hoped that the event raised at least £100,000 for the charity.

Georgie Clark, 21, ran the 5k event on Sunday. She said: “I decided to do Race for Life as it seemed like a fun way for my friends and I to get some exercise and raise money for a very worthy cause.

“Cancer is something that has touched everyone’s lives and the vibe at the starting line was both emotional and exciting.

“While the heatwave made training and running slightly more difficult, especially on the hills, no one at the event was phased and there was an extremely positive and inspirational feeling amongst the runners and many supporters who cheered them on.”

Sponsorship money can be paid online, by phone, by cheque or in person at a Cancer Research UK shop.
