CALLOUS thieves stole a Poppy Appeal charity collection from a St Albans post office on Saturday.

The “disgusting crime” was condemned by the owner of the London Road shop and sub postmistress, Tina Patel.

She said: “I’m very angry about this matter. There was a lot of money in that box because people are always very generous when giving to the Poppy Appeal.

“There are many similar crimes happening up and down this road and something needs to be done.”

Two men were arrested on Wednesday and charged with theft. Ashley Allwood, 21, of Bricket Road, St Albans, and Martin Deamer, 23, of New Kent Road, St Albans, were remanded in police custody.

They were due to appear at Hatfield Remand Court yesterday.
