Fitness First flipped their way to success in the annual St Albans Pancake Race in the city centre on Tuesday.

Bright sunshine brought out the crowds to watch 100 competitors steady their frying pans before tossing their pancakes either on the run or in a fast walk.

Sixteen teams contested the running race with nine competing in the walkers race, both of which were held in St Peter’s Street.

Fitness First won the running race with ILife Batchwood in second place and St Peter’s Panners in third.

Taking the winners’ frying pan in the walkers race was Rennie Grove Colour Blasters with Kingston Smith Floppers second and the Hare and Hounds third.

The Rennie Grove team was sporting colourful, funky outfits, complete with fluorescent sunglasses, to promote itss new event, Colour Blast, which will take place at Westminster Lodge in August.

Community fundraising manager, Nicola MacKinnon, said; “This is always such a great community event to be part of. The charity has been taking part for years and we are really excited to have won this year.”

Among the hundreds of spectators was the Mayor of St Albans, Cllr Geoff Harrison. who presented frying pan awards to the winning teams.

He said: “I want to congratulate everyone who competed in the 2015 St Albans Pancake Races, especially the winning teams - Fitness First and Rennie Grove Colour Blasters.

“Thanks are also due to the organisers from the council who worked so hard to make the event happen. All the competitors deserve praise for their skill, enthusiasm and hand/eye co-ordination. I particularly want to congratulate those who raised money for charity and the spirited competitors who wore fancy dress.”
