Hopes to re-open the Oxfam charity shop in St Albans as quickly as possible after a fire ravaged thousands of pounds of donated stock have been dashed.

Loss adjustors have recently visited the Chequer Street shop, and Oxfam has been informed that damage to the building structure from the February 21 blaze is worse than initially thought.

No re-opening date can be given until repairs have been made.

Up to £15,000 worth of stock, including designer handbags, were destroyed in the fire on the top floor. A sharp-eyed binman alerted firefighters to the 6.40am blaze.
