St Albans Museum + Gallery wins architecture awards

St Albans Museum + Gallery has won two regional architecture awards for the renovation of the historic Georgian town hall.

The museum and gallery and its architects, John McAslan + Partners, were presented with two awards from RIBA (the Royal Institute of British Architects) in a ceremony at Downing College in Cambridge on Thursday.

RIBA celebrates outstanding work in the field of architecture, and the £7.75 million museum and gallery won both the RIBA East Award and a RIBA East Special Award for Conservation.

Cllr Annie Brewster, portfolio holder for culture and sport, said: "To win the overall Conservation Award in addition to a Regional Award is absolutely incredible.

"This accolade is the highest honour and we are delighted the RIBA Jury were so taken with the repurposing of our iconic city centre landmark."
