A mum-of-three has received a Maltings Community Award and a cheque for £100 for supporting the local branch of Greenpeace and campaigning to save Butterfly World.

Juliet Voisey, of Frythmead, St Albans, was nominated for the award by her friend Jo McCullen, who praised her as “an amazing selfless individual”.

In her day job, Juliet works as a childminder and takes care of around eight children per week, as well as her three sons Ryan, 13, Fenton, 10, and Aidan, six. She also volunteers as treasurer for the St Michael’s Primary School PTA, runs the St Albans Greenpeace Group, and assists the Folly Lane Allotment Group, manning a stall at Larks in the Parks and selling plants and seeds to raise money.

Juliet said: “I am on the committee for Save Butterfly World, which we’re trying to get reopened or find a suitable site. I used to go as a member all the time and then when it closed some people met on site and formed an action group. It’s so sad to lose it.

“It’s just a sad loss of an attraction for St Albans which was brilliant.”

With help from her husband Darren, Juliet also organises events for St Michael’s PTA and helps raise funds for the school. She said: “It’s such a small school. I’ve organised a jumble sale which was massive and filled our house with stuff, and I’ve organised the Christmas and summer fair.

“The best part of what I do is seeing the results really; when we get wins with Greenpeace and companies agree to do the best thing, and raising money for the school.”

Speaking about how she felt to receive the nomination, Juliet said: “Quite humbled really, because lots of people give their time up.

“Jo who nominated me runs an old people’s lunch club so I thought she should be nominated too.”

Jo said: “[Juliet] is an all round ‘good egg’ and St Albans is a better place for having her in it. I am proud and honoured to be her friend and to nominate her for this brilliant community award.”

Juliet has urged anyone who supports the reopening of Butterfly World to get involved at www.savebutterflyworld.org, and invites people to come along to Greenpeace meetings at 7.30pm on the first Thursday of the month at the Slug and Lettuce.
