Scientists working hard to find cures for cancer have been praised by a local politician.

St Albans MP Anne Main recently joined Cancer Research UK scientists to find out more about the charity’s push to accelerate efforts to save more lives in the East of England.

Meeting representatives of the charity at Westminster, Mrs Main said that while some figures for St Albans were “encouraging” for patients seeking urgent referrals, the proportion of those waiting six weeks or longer for a diagnostic test for cancer has dropped below the national average.

Mrs Main participated in interactive experiments with cancer researchers, learning about the biology of cancer and cutting-edge work to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.

But despite successes to date, Cancer Research UK believes much more needs to be done.

Sara Osborne, head of policy at the charity, said: “We must not underestimate the devastating impact that cancer has on the lives of those with a cancer diagnosis and their families.

“It’s great to have Anne’s support to highlight the vital role MPs and their constituents can play in helping to tackle all cancers.”

Next month local residents can raise concerns about the quality of health services offered by West Herts Hospitals NHS Trust at a meeting being chaired by the MP.
