Anti rail freight campaigners were joined by St Albans MP Anne Main outside the High Court this morning at the start of a High Court appeal against a government decision to give the scheme planning permission.
St Albans council, backed by campaign group STRiFE, are contesting last year’s ruling by Eric Pickles, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, that developers Helioslough should be granted planning permission to build a Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI) on the former Radlett Airfield in Park Street.
The battle to prevent the SRFI being built on Green Belt land has been going on for the past seven years and cost local council taxpayers nearly £1.5 million.
Two days have been allocated for the appeal at which the council is challenging Mr Pickles’ decision on three points of law. STRiFE also has legal representation in the High Court.
