St Albans MP Anne Main has welcomed the Government’s announcement that it will start clamping down on plastic waste, after an alliance of local green groups encouraged the district to go plastic-free.

Mrs Main, who was recently elected chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on the Prevention of Plastic Waste, said the announcement signalled “a clear intent to tackle the scourge of single-use plastics that do so much damage to our environment and wildlife.”

The APPG met with Sian Sutherland from A Plastic Planet to discuss how consumers and producers can move to a more sustainable form of packaging.

St Albans Friends of the Earth recently formed an alliance with Plastic Free St Albans and Sustainable St Albans, encouraging people to stop using single-use products like bottles, straws and balloons. Plastic Free St Albans is launching a campaign in April as part of Sustainable St Albans Week.
