St Albans MP Anne Main will “hold the government’s feet to the fire” after being selected to lead a new plastic waste group.
She was unanimously elected by her fellow MPs to chair the all-party parliamentary group on the prevention of plastic waste.
“As local people know, the environment is very important to me. During my 12 years as an MP, environmental issues constantly make up most of my post bag,” said Mrs Main.
Green issues have featured prominently in the headlines recently following proposals to charge people for disposable plastic cups and the government’s announcement of a 25-year plan for the environment.
The group will monitor the 25-year plan in relation to plastic waste and work towards minimising that waste.
Mrs Main said she was “excited” to be chairing a group that will “hold the government’s feet to the fire” over its environmental commitments.
