WITH 38 flood alerts issued so far today for south east England, including two for St Albans, the Environment Agency (EA) is urging residents to look out for surface water flooding.
Further “significant” rainfall is expected across the region tonight, Monday, following the heavy rain which affected most of the south east over the weekend.
Howard Davidson, the EA’s south east regional director, said: “We urge everyone to remain vigilant ahead of further predicted rainfall.
“We continue to monitor river levels, check and operate flood defences and remove any blockages that may increase the risk of flooding.”
More heavy rainfall of up to 25mm is expected across the region this evening.
Residents in Radlett, Harpenden, Wheathampstead, London Colney and Colney Heath have already been told of flood alerts for the River Colne, River Lea and Tykes Water.
The alert means that flooding is possible. The EA has warned that there is risk of further surface water flooding, from drains unable to cope with the recent deluge.
Motorists are being urged to stay out of dangerous flood water, and not to attempt to drive through it.
St Albans district councillor for Colney Heath Chris Brazier said that the River Colne breached its banks at about 4pm today, spilling on to the Common.
He said: “It is approaching people’s gardens.”
