A big-hearted milkman who does his rounds in St Albans will receive free broadband for a year after being championed as an everyday hero in his community.

Mick Tutton, 57, who has been doing milk rounds for 40 years, was nominated by his customers as part of a #LovesYouBack campaign run by Internet provider Plusnet.

The Milkman, who is employed by Nigel Marlow Dairy Produce, delivers in St Michael’s, Kingsbury and Camlet Way in St Albans, is no stranger to winning awards. Last year he was chosen as Community Champion of the Year in the Mayor’s Pride Awards and he has been made an MBE.

He makes his customers’ days by going far and beyond the standard duties expected of the humble milkman.

On receiving his accolade Mick said: “I’m so pleased to have been nominated as one of Plusnet’s everyday heroes. I don’t live in St Albans so I have to get up between midnight and 2am everyday – but that doesn’t put me off. I go out of my way to try to make my customers happy.

“I want to make sure that everyone has a good start to their day, and simple things like saying hello or asking someone how they’re feeling are the friendly gestures that go a long way.”

One local customer, who nominated him for the award, said: “Mick is without a doubt my everyday hero. He doesn’t just deliver the milk, he also chats with older people, does their shopping and takes the frail on walks around our area. Seeing his gestures of kindness brighten my day – it’s lovely to see someone caring so much for strangers in the community.”

Mick is one of several people being championed by the broadband and telephone provider as part of a nationwide search to find the everyday heroes whose small gestures make big difference on the lives of a local community.
