A man who detained a pregnant woman against her will and kicked her in the stomach during a sustained attack has avoided being jailed.

Chokri Ramdani, 29, of Ellis House, Charrington Place, St Albans, carried out the brutal assault in the city on November 16.

He pleaded not guilty to all charges, but on July 4 he was found guilty at a hearing at St Albans magistrates’ court of assault by beating and pursuing a course of harassment by phone calls and texts between January 1 and February 6.

The case was adjourned for sentencing until last Thursday, at which time Ramdani was committed to prison for 20 weeks suspended for 18 months, ordered to attend rehabilitation appointments for a maximum of 30 days, and was made subject to a restraining order until July 26 2019. He was also fined £100 and ordered to pay £530 costs and £115 towards victim services.
