A woman has been banned from Hertfordshire for a year after stealing hundreds of pounds worth of clothes from Marks and Spencer in St Albans.

Elaine Thomas, 57, denied two counts of theft in January but was found guilty at St Albans Magistrates’ Court on July 17.

Thomas stole men’s clothing on January 8.

She also stole £513 worth of clothing from the store on January 13.

She was given a 12-week jail sentence, suspended for 12 months after magistrates deemed the offences to be especially serious.

Thomas was given a 12-month supervision period.

She was placed under electronic curfew for three months, starting from July 17.

The resident of Lynton Road, Bermonsey, South East London, must remain at home between 8pm and 7am.

She was ordered to pay £115 to victim services and £620 court costs at a rate of £20 per month.

No application was made by the court for compensation as it was not clear whether the stolen goods had been recovered.
