Small change added up to big bucks when children at a St Albans kindergarten raised money for a charity.

The youngsters at Mount Carmel Kindergarten in Sandpit Lane were collecting small change for the Mary’s Meals, a charity providing one good meal to some of the world’s poorest children every school day.

The children raised £747 for the charity and the nursery school made up the difference making a total of £1,000. That figure will be matched by the government.

Principal Lucia Federici said: “We have been supporting Mary’s Meals for several years as it is a cause that young children can easily relate to.

“We were overwhelmed by the generosity of the nursery parents during this loose change appeal and the money will transform the lives of hundreds of children worldwide.”

The sum raised will mean that around 200 of the world’s poorest children will be fed at school for one year.
