Cllr Zia watched demonstrations by primary, junior and senior students, who showed how judo can be used for self-defence and told him how it can be suitable for people of all ages and sizes.

Chairman of St Albans Judo Club trustees Adam Rowley said: “The new dojo has provided us with a much bigger mat space on which to train and it is a much better quality facility than the previous one where we had been operating for many years.

“It has given us more capacity for training sessions so we can have more students on the mat at any one point.”

Cllr Zia was said to be impressed by the purpose-built facility with its large mat area and sprung floor at the volunteer-run club.
