TEN Chinese lanterns were released when over a thousand young people and their leaders celebrated the Girlguiding UK centenary in St Albans.

Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Senior Section and adult volunteers met up at Marlborough School for an evening of entertainment and celebration.

It including cheerleading led by the Saracens Sensations, street dancing by local group Tuxedo, a Bollywood dance workshop and singing by local artist Sian Samuels and Scout member Nick Godden. Among the guests was the Mayor of St Albans, Cllr Chris Oxley, who took part in all the activities.

The Chinese lanterns, one for each decade of the centenary, were released at the end of the evening.

Jo Swanston, division commissioner for Girlguiding St Albans, said: "The evening was a great success and a memorable way to mark the start of a very special year for our members.
