A DETERMINED five year old has scooped the top prize in a national poetry competition after telling his parents he would write the winning entry.

Peter Laanest, who attends Fleetville Infants School in St Albans, wanted to enter the WildVerse competition after seeing that the main prize was a Pure radio that could connect to the internet and set about composing ‘If the Cows Can’t Go Moo’.

His mum said: “He was very focused on the fact that he would win and when the news came in the post, he asked me, before I’d opened it, whether it was the letter to say he had won.

“It was a total surprise to us that he did but he’s delighted with the prize and he’s shared it with his brother too.”

Peter, who is a member of the RSPB Wildlife Explorers Club, was named overall winner in the under eights category of the competition and got to hear his work read out on Fun Kids radio last weekend.
