St Albans firefighters searched along a major motorway to find a lorry fire which the driver was attempting to tackle.
The vehicle was somewhere along the M1 when it became clear it was ablaze. The driver called his employers in a panic, before trying to extinguish the fire himself.
Herts Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) could not make contact with him, but sent crews from St Albans, Borehamwood, and Kings Langley to find the lorry and get the blaze under control.
When firefighters found the vehicle, they made the area safe. It turned out he was technically in London Fire Brigade territory.
In light of the incident, HFRS has reminded everyone to call 999 in an emergency.
