St Albans fire station

ST ALBANS fire station is holding its annual open day this Sunday, September 9.

The free event from midday until 4pm will offer an insight into the life of a firefighter as well as a chance to look around the London Road station.

There will be various attractions and stalls at the family-friendly day including a chip pan demonstration and a walk-through smoke experience.

Firefighters will be using the ‘peg car’ which they dismantle to demonstrate how they get people out of car collisions as well as testing out hydraulic cutting equipment on scrap cars.

Hertfordshire’s fire investigation dog CC, along with her dog handler Nikki Harvey, will be on hand to show how they assist the fire service.

Children are also invited to bring along their cuddly toys for the ‘teddy bear parachute’ from the aerial ladder platform.

Tony Bates, Watch Commander for green watch, said: “It’s usually very well attended by the local community and it’s a chance for them to see what we do, what we’ve got, and how we do it.”
