A DISABLED couple have been left housebound after thieves stole their mobility scooter last month.

Jean Smith and her husband George, of Chapel Place, had safely left their silver scooter outside their bungalow for 17 years.

but between 4pm on August 27 and 7am the following day the scooter was taken from under its tarpaulin cover.

Mrs Smith said: “I don’t know how they did it, it’s quite heavy to lift.”

The mobility scooter, which is worth about £2,000, was the couple’s lifeline to the outside world and Mrs Smith said they have been unable to leave the house ever since the incident.

She added: “We’ve been quite lucky and asked people to get things for us and our home carer does our shopping.”

The police are currently investigating the theft and Mrs Smith has said they have been very kind: “They’ve realised how difficult it is for us.”

A spokeswoman for the police said they are appealing for witnesses.

Anyone with information is asked to contact them via the non-emergency number 101. Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
