THOUSANDS of St Albans District residents have been affected by the disappearance of a council laptop.
The laptop, one of four believed to have been stolen from the council offices last Monday, contains personal data - including names, addresses, dates of birth and signatures - concerning the 14,673 residents who applied to cast their votes by post this year.
Chief Executive for the council Daniel Goodwin apologised to the district's postal voters and assured them that he was treating the case "very seriously indeed".
An internal investigation and a review of the council's security arrangements have been ordered.
