A CLIMBER from St Albans was being held in custody in Beijing today (Friday) after unfurling a "Free Tibet" banner on the Television centre building.

Philip Kirk, aged 24, who is believed to work for the outdoor- equipment shop Cotswold Camping in Victoria Street, and another climber had scaled the Central Television building to make their protest.

He and the other climber, Nicole Rycroft, are part of the organisation, Students for a Free Tibet, whose members have taken part in several demonstrations in Beijing during the Olympic Games.

Mr Kirk is understood to have attended Swansea Institute.
