Well-used steps in a St Albans park have re-opened after receiving a complete makeover.
The former Hatfield Road wooden steps and ramp into Clarence Park attracted attention earlier this year after a routine inspection uncovered areas of concern - St Albans district council (SADC) decided to close the entrance for repairs. The steps are a popular cut-through for commuters using St Albans City Station.
The steps’ structural issues have been in the public eye since 2015. In March SADC’s city neighbourhoods committee decided to replace both the ramp and steps in steel rather than wood, within an £120,000 budget. The new steel staircase has now reopened, with the ramp to follow by the end of September.
Head of community services for SADC, Debbi White, said: “Many people who regularly use this entrance, including rail station commuters, have been waiting patiently for this to happen. I’m delighted that the wait for the steps is now over.”
