A petition against the closure of two wards at St Albans City Hospital has received 700 signatures.

St Albans Labour has organised it as part of a campaign against the closure of the Sopwell and Langton wards.

Spokesperson Jill Gipps said: “People in St Albans understand the importance of local services which help elderly people get ready for a safe return home, while family and friends can visit daily.

“We cannot stand by and let these beds be closed.”

The Sopwell and Langton wards house 39 community beds, which are used by Herts Community Trust for rehabilitative care after treatment.

Recent budget cuts led Herts Valley Clinical Commissioning Group to stop funding the beds, saving £2.8 million.

In response, St Albans district council passed a Labour motion to call NHS officials in for questioning.

The party has started an online petition, in addition to a paper petition they have been running from a market stall.

I should probably have taken the hint! Walking out into the garden recently an unprecedented flock of thirty or more crows raucously greeted me from the treetops at the bottom of my garden. Cawing and croaking these big, black birds clung clumsily to the top most branches and twigs, jostling and flapping to stay balanced in a constant flurry of feathers. There is always something ominous about crows – they are after all carrion crows, the vultures of the bird world – always watching for scraps and weakness that might mean their next meal.
