St Albans city hospital is going smoke free from October.
West Hertfordshire Hospitals Trust (WHHT), which runs St Albans hospital, have announced smoking will no longer be allowed on the grounds.
Director for Human Resources at WHHT, Paul de Gama, said: “It’s completely wrong that so many people continue to openly smoke on hospital grounds.
“Not only does it send out all the wrong messages regarding smoking, it creates mess and is bad for the health of our patients and local population.
“That’s why our aim is to become a completely smoke free environment.
“It won’t happen overnight, but we’ll be taking practical steps like removing our smoking shelter.
“We’ll also be offering support to patients and staff wishing to quit through the provision of smoking cessation assistance.”
WHHT also runs Hemel Hempstead and Watford hospitals, treating around 600,000 people a year.
