A shopping centre was transformed into a luxury summer holiday destination for a community party.

Christopher Place hosted the Taste the High Life event last Friday, offering free cocktail samples, face painting, summer collection showcases and live music.

About 3,000 people enjoyed the celebration, which was funded and delivered by St Albans Business Improvement District (BID).

Christopher Place manager Catherine Morris said: “The band were fantastic, it was great - like being on holiday.

“We could not have asked for more with the weather and the people, there was no trouble and it did exactly what we wanted it to do, which is bring the community together.”

She said the shopping centre is planning a Christmas party, and would like to use the events to showcase up and coming local bands.

Catherine added: “The people of St Albans want this, this is something they love and the timing was exactly right.

“Drinks were flowing and it was a huge success.”

There was three separate cocktail bars run by Tomoka Spirits Boutique, and the inventor of the Pornstar Martini, Douglas Ankrah, gave a demonstration of his recipe and offered free samples.

Local band Swanvesta Social Club entertained the crowds throughout the event and a flash mob from Naomi Czuba Dance surprised onlookers with an impromptu salsa performance.

Restaurants residing in Christopher Place offered free samples and fizz to go alongside the music.

Iconic brownies from The Pudding Stop were on sale and people sparkled with the help of Glitterbox face art.

There were also raffles and competitions for visitors to enter.

BID manager Helen Burridge said: “We are so pleased that so many retailers and restaurants worked with us to help such an enthusiastic audience Taste the High Life for the first time.

“This kind of investment in one of our key shopping areas demonstrates what can be achieved when businesses work together.”

Last year, crowds gathered at a similar Gin and Jazz event organised by BID in George Street.
