duty,Christmas lights in St Albans city centre are being switched on at the same time as the festive market opens in Vintry Garden this year.

By linking the switch on and the market opening on Sunday, November 24, the aim is to spread Christmas cheer across both events.

The only downside is that it is all happening on the same date as the Harpenden Christmas lights switch-on.

Councillor Beric Read, St Albans council’s portfolio holder for community engagement and localism, said: “We’re improving what’s on offer at the city centre this Christmas by switching on the lights on the opening weekend of the Christmas market.

“Linking these two special events will bring extra atmosphere and excitement to St Albans to get Christmas off to a cracking start.”

He went on: “We consulted with a wide range of interested parties, including retailers, about these changes and they have been very supportive. The organisers and others who were consulted are all very positive about the changes.

“The fact that the St Albans and Harpenden events coincide this year should not affect many visitors as the vast majority go to one or the other.”

The Christmas market, held in the walled Vintry Garden next to St Albans Abbey, will remain open until Sunday, December 18.

Cllr Read added: “As a council, we are committed to helping local businesses and the Christmas lights and market is a big part of that marketing effort.”
