High-flying schoolgirl Nadia Jaufarally has demonstrated that she is no pawn in the game of chess.

The St Albans Girls School pupil has been crowned winner of the Girls UK Under 12 Chess Championship.

Nadia, who is in Year Seven, won the title after competing in eight weekend tournaments before making it to the final.

She was originally taught the game two years ago by her father and has now been selected to play for England in an international competition for Under 12 girls.

Nadia said: “I really like thinking up different plans on how to capture my opponent’s pieces.”
