The St Albans charity cycle ride (SACCR) is entering its final leg, with just weeks until the event.

Teams from local charities and businesses are lining up for the ride, which is being held on Sunday, May 14.

They include previous winners Team Fabulous, whose spokesperson Teresa Clarke said: “We started cycling five mile rides to encourage ladies to get on their bikes again.

“We asked ourselves could we do 20 miles on the St Albans Rotary Charity Cycle Ride and were amazed when we decided that we could.

“Every Sunday we practised and 20 miles was a target to work towards.

“There are six in our team and it is enjoyable talking to other cyclists as the miles go by.

“Raising more than we initially thought possible for the charities was a bonus.”

One other team, from charity Deserving Children Africa, came from Buckinghamshire to take part.

Team member Magrait Wells said: “This is a small charity that raises funds to provide food for people in a Kenyan village through a lunch time feeding programme.

“I have done the St Albans Rotary Charity Cycle Ride many times as it works really well for small charities like ours.

“Two of us opted to cycle 10 miles while the others achieved 30 and 40.”

The SACCR is run by the three rotary clubs of St Albans in support of Herts Action on Disability, Youth Talk, and Home-Start.

London Colney scout group also regularly take part in the SACCR. Group leader Chris Taylor (known as ‘Chick’) said: “We are hoping to get people entered as we had about 18 Scouts enter last year, and we are trying to do the same thing this year. I will be doing it myself.

“What we did last year was we incorporated it into their badge work, so everyone brought their bikes in beforehand so they had to service them.

“They then took part in the 10 mile ride.

“We never do it for any sponsorship, just for the Scouts’ achievement.”

He praised the SACCR’s organisers, saying: “I cannot express how well organised it is. You can almost leave the Scouts to themselves, it’s so well run.”
