ITALIANS in St Albans came together earlier this month to join worldwide celebrations of their home country’s 150 years of unification.

The Italian Welfare Organisation, under the guidance of Commendatore Rocco Di Lieto and the Honorary Consul of Italy, Dr Luciano Rapa, organised the event which was held at Verulamium Museum.

Sixty local Italian nationals were joined by St Albans MP Anne Main, the leader of the district council, Robert Donald, and Tony Smith on behalf of Herts Police.

Dr Rapa explained how Italy became one nation through many different origins and various historical traditions, from the Romans to Longobards, and from intellectuals like Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio until the Italians believed in their own national identity.

His speech was followed by a tour of the museum and the event came to a close with the Italian national anthem Fratelli D’Italia.
