Tonight’s General Election hustings at St Albans cathedral have been cancelled after the tragic terrorist attack on Manchester last night.
The event was due to be held this evening (23), and would have featured the four candidates standing for the St Albans constituency answering questions from the public.
It was called off after 22 people were killed and 59 people injured at a music concert at Manchester Arena.
Rev Kevin Walton said: “Following last night’s tragic event in Manchester we have decided to postpone tonight’s hustings.
“Instead, the Cathedral will be open for an hour from 7pm for anyone to come and light a candle, expressing our sorrow and shock, our thoughts and prayers for those who have died and all who are affected, and also our hope that light will overcome.”
Greater Manchester Police have said a lone male attacker detonated an improvised explosive device, and died in the blast.
The Cathedral has not yet confirmed if the hustings will be rescheduled.
All four of the parties contesting St Albans have suspended campaigning in the wake of the attack.
