Summer holiday activities with fun literary and historical themes are being run by St Albans Cathedral’s education centre throughout August.

They include free Family Discovery Mornings based on fun, literary themes which run every Thursday morning throughout August. Families can drop in between 10am and 12.30pm to take part.

The first session next tomorrow, August 4, features a trail celebrating 50 years since Michael Bond wrote Paddington at Work. Young visitors will be invited to explore the cathedral and take part in fun arts & crafts activities – they can even bring their own Paddington Bear.

Other trails include Winnie the Pooh (August 11), Peter Rabbit (August 18) and Roald Dahl (August 25). In addition there will be some story telling and the opportunity to learn about how ‘hunny’ was made at the cathedral in medieval times.

There is no need to book Family Discovery Mornings. For more information go to the website www.stalbanscathedral.org/whatson.

Also taking place in August are the cathedral’s arts and crafts workshops, ‘What did the Romans do for us?’ and ‘Medieval Madness’ which take place on Monday, August 22, and Tuesday, August 23, respectively.

The sessions which start at 10.30am and 2pm, offer children aged seven to 11, the opportunity to learn about Roman and medieval life in St Albans, handle artefacts and take part in a fun craft session.

Tickets are available from the cathedral box office costing £6 per child or £10 for two children. Places can be booked by telephone on 01727 890290, online, or in the cathedral shop.

The cathedral’s education officer, Steve Clarke said ‘Our range of summer holiday activities allow children the chance to explore and learn about both classic children’s story characters as well as famous historical figures connected with St Albans. We are looking forward to welcoming visitors of all ages.’
