St Albans Cathedral has appointed its first female sub-dean, who will take up the post in February next year.

The Reverend Abigail Thompson is currently vicar of St James, Clifton in Rotherham and dean of women’s ministry for the Diocese of Sheffield. Before ordination Abigail was a youth worker and freelance professional singer, and served her curacy at Sheffield Manor Parish.

As sub-dean, her responsibilities will include coordinating the pastoral care of the congregation. She will also act as the dean’s deputy and chair meetings if he is absent.

The Reverend Abigail Thompson said “I am extremely excited about joining the team at St Albans and contributing to the life of the Cathedral. I have already been made to feel enormously welcome and look forward with great joy to getting to know the people of this community and praying alongside them.”

She will be formally installed as Canon on Saturday, February 24, 2018.
