A ST ALBANS boy undergoing chemotherapy for cancer has helped create a scented candle to raise funds for his own medical care after a hospital refused to give the 12 year old further treatment.

Bailey Sarwa recently suffered a recurrence of neuroblastoma, a rare cancer affecting nerve cells, after nearly seven years in remission.

His determined family and friends were forced to launch a fundraising campaign to try and secure medical care overseas after he was refused potentially life-saving treatment here. To obtain treatment in either Germany or the United States costs up to 500,000.

Great Ormond Street Hospital, where Bailey began his fifth round of chemotherapy this week, told his mum, Becki Jones, and dad, Chris Sarwa, that it would not give him a vital antibody treatment as it is not available to those who have relapsed or have not responded to standard care.

Despite his illness, the boy has helped Team Bailey’s fundraising efforts by creating a special candle at Potters Crouch Candles, a scented candle company based at the Gorhambury Estate.

Director of the firm, Joanne Martin, said that she went to school with Becki, and upon hearing about Bailey’s relapse she offered to make a fundraising candle. Bailey loves candles and regularly buys them for his mum.

Joanne explained: “Bailey was really excited by this project, so I set up a meeting with him where he chose the scent, colour, decoration and design of the labels, and we brought it to life for him.

“He came to the barn twice to help us make the candles and get them ready for sale.”

Bailey has called the candle “Believe” because he believes he can beat the cancer.

The candle’s scent is of a berry smoothie, and it is in a container featuring a picture of Bailey sitting on the moon fishing for a star.

The midnight blue coloured candle has been made to look like the sky at night, decorated with silver glitter and Chaton crystals from the Czech Republic.

The candles are available for 10, with over 60 per cent of proceeds going to the Team Bailey appeal. To buy the candle, visit www.potterscrouchcandles.co.uk/potters-crouch/the-bailey-sarwa-appeal
