A teenage boy from St Albans has been selected to represent the east of England by cycling in the 2018 School Games.
Oliver Stockwell, who is 16 and attends Verulam School, will compete against other school-age athletes at Loughborough University from Thursday, August 30 to Sunday, September 2.
More than 1,400 athletes will compete across 11 sports at the School Games, including five disability disciplines. Oliver is representing cycling group Welwyn Wheelers, and is national circuit champion.
This year there will be four new sports: canoeing and rowing, laser run, netball and triathlon, and athletes will live in the dedicated sports village at Loughborough University and perform in front of crowds of spectators.
Ali Oliver, CEO of the Youth Sport Trust, said: “The School Games National Finals provide a great opportunity for talented young athletes like Oliver. “Competitors get a real taste of what it’s like to be part of a world-class sporting event.”
