BLOCKBUSTER in St Albans has been earmarked as one of the branches that could be bought by a supermarket giant.

The Herts Advertiser understands staff at the DVD and games rental service, in London Road, have been informed the store will be shutting down as it has been purchased.

This comes after it emerged earlier this week Morrisons has taken over 49 Blockbuster premises as it moves to open dozens of local convenience stores by the end of the year.

After Blockbuster went into administration last month it was announced in order to restructure the company for sale they would be closing 164 stores nationwide.

While the St Albans outlet, which has 12 employees, was not included in this list, joint administrators Deloitte said they were still continuing discussions with landlords and interested parties.

Administrators said they could not confirm if the store has been purchased.
