THE BISHOP of St Albans has extended his congratulations to Prince William and Kate Middleton following Tuesday’s announcement of their engagement.
The Rt Rev Alan Smith wished the royal couple a “long and happy marriage” and described a wedding as a matter for great rejoicing. He went on: “It is the beginning of a new unit, a new team and, we hope, a new family. It is a sign of hope and a way in which couples enjoy God’s blessing.
“So congratulations William and Kate on your engagement and may you have a long and happy marriage.”
The St Albans district has strong royal connections with members of the Royal family frequent visitors. Prince William’s mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, came to the city twice - once to open the Maltings shopping centre and again to unveil the Rose Window at St Albans Abbey.
And by a strange irony, Lady Rosanagh Innes-Ker, the daughter of the Duke of Roxburghe who was once tipped as an eligible wife for the Prince before he began dating Kate Middleton, went on to marry Viscountess Grimston, the heir to the Earl of Verulam whose family seat is at Gorhambury in St Albans. She recently presented her husband with a son, John.
