SOUND designer Glenn Freemantle mingled with the stars on Sunday when he won a BAFTA award for his work on Slumdog Millionaire.

Glenn, aged 49, of Grasmere Avenue, Harpenden, went up on the Royal Opera House stage to collect the BAFTA - British Academy of Film and Television Arts - award for Best Sound on a feature film.

He has been working in the film industry for more than 30 years and has so far edited the sound on around 70 films. He beat blockbusters such as The Dark Knight and Quantum of Solace to clinch this year's Best Sound award, an honour he has been striving for ever since his first BAFTA nomination 15 years ago for the film Backbeat.

Glenn, who took his wife Alison to the awards, said it was an amazing evening: "My wife and I were dropped off at the red carpet and we walked through to a champagne and canap reception with the stars. We were sat right at the very front with the rest of the Slumdog Millionaire crew and it was exciting to have the cameras follow me up on stage for my acceptance speech."

After a glitzy ceremony during which Slumdog Millionaire won a total of seven BAFTAs, the A-list guests were treated to a banquet and music from pop band The Feeling at the Grosvenor House Hotel reception. Glenn said that he particularly enjoyed the fabulous food and meeting fellow BAFTA winners Penelope Cruz and Mickey Rourke.

Glenn, whose job entails assembling sound recordings in preparation for the final mastering of motion pictures, has also been nominated for the same award at the Oscars on February 22.

He said: "It's going to be a jet-setting weekend for Alison and me, because I'm up for best sound editor at the Motion Picture Sound Editor awards in LA the night before the Oscars. I'm looking forward to both evenings."

Glenn, who has three sons all of whom have followed their father's footsteps into the media industry, is currently working on titles such as Agora, an historical drama set in Egypt, and Everybody's Fine, the new Robert De Niro film.

Glenn, who has lived in Harpenden for more than 20 years, said that he loved his job and owed much of his BAFTA success to his ever-supportive wife and crew members at his Pinewood Studios-based business, Sound 24.
