Temperatures plunged to well below zero degrees celsius overnight, prompting these skaters to enjoy an impromptu game of ice hockey on a frozen Verulamium Lake.

We can expect a crisp and sunny day for St Albans market today, followed by another cold spell overnight, before temperatures start to rise slightly towards the end of the week.

St Albans council, which manages Verulamium Lake, issues annual warnings advising people not to tempt fate by skating on its surface when it freezes.
