A SPECIAL plaque was presented to seven musical girls at a St Albans primary school who won a Christmas carol contest last year.

The Abbey School was crowned the winners of the competition to find a local carol organised by the Maltings Shopping Centre with support from the Herts Advertiser.

Complete with Santa outfits and a dance routine, Katie Short, Okuk Takon, Ellen Smith, Georgina Beard, Alexandra Felton, Madeleine Brooks and Abigail Caton wowed the judges at the final showdown of the competition at the Maltings Arts Theatre in December.

Their school was awarded £500 towards new music equipment and the girls recorded their song - Christmas is Coming to St Albans - to CD. They also performed at the Mayor's Christmas Carol Concert.

The seven girls were presented with an engraved plaque and CD by Sally Bason on behalf of the Maltings Shopping Centre.
