A shopkeeper from London has been fined £600 after boxes from his shop were dumped in Chiswell Green.

Shahid Ghani, of Dawson Road, London, was fined £267, and ordered to pay costs of £300 and a £30 victim surcharge by St Albans magistrates on Wednesday, May 10.

St Albans district council prosecuted Mr Ghani after tracing waste dumped on Ragged Hall Lane in Chiswell Green back to him.

Mr Ghani pleaded guilty to failing to discharge his legal ‘duty of care’ in disposing of controlled waste.

He admitted giving cardboard boxes that had contained goods for his Islington shop to a man in a van without checking the man had a licence to carry waste.

St Albans council portfolio holder for the environment, Cllr Daniel Chichester-Miles, said: “It is essential that people ensure that their waste is being disposed of legitimately in line with their duty of the care.

“Otherwise, they could end up being prosecuted if their waste is later found to have been fly-tipped by another person.”

The council say they have been unable to track down the man in the van.
