Hundreds of people in St Albans, Harpenden and surrounding villages came together to mark a two minutes silence, lay wreaths, attend church services, and march through the streets to remember the fallen heroes of conflicts around the world.

The moment of quiet is held at 11am to specifically coincide with the end of the First World War.

Scouts, women’s groups, schools, cadets, religious and council representatives, marching bands, and members of The Royal British Legion (RBL) attended.

There were services at St Leonard’s Church in Sandridge, St Peter’s Church in St Albans city centre, the war memorial in Harpenden’s Church Green, and at the Parish War Memorial in Park Street.

Each year the RBL distribute paper poppies in the weeks leading up to Remembrance Sunday to raise money for the charity.

I should probably have taken the hint! Walking out into the garden recently an unprecedented flock of thirty or more crows raucously greeted me from the treetops at the bottom of my garden. Cawing and croaking these big, black birds clung clumsily to the top most branches and twigs, jostling and flapping to stay balanced in a constant flurry of feathers. There is always something ominous about crows – they are after all carrion crows, the vultures of the bird world – always watching for scraps and weakness that might mean their next meal.
