ST ALBANS: Schools are to be approached about the possibility of opening up their swimming pools for community use if there is a shortfall of waterspace in the district when the new Westminster Lodge opens.
The PoolTooSmall Group, backed by a council overview and scrutiny committee, maintains that the new leisure centre, which is about to begin construction fronting Holywell Hill in St Albans, will have insufficient swimming space because it will only have eight lanes.
The council’s head of culture and community, Richard Shwe, had been asked to bring a report to this week’s meeting of cabinet about the possible provision of a new pool site in the district, opening up existing pool facilities for community use and funding for the proposals at minimum cost to the council.
Mr Shwe said delays in signing the contract for the new leisure centre had made it difficult to meet the time frame but letters would be sent to schools about whether their swimming facilities could be made available.
