SIX more schools in the area have been awarded a share of more than £235,000 of Government grants to promote sustainable travel to their pupils.

They are among 40 new additions in Herts to a list of schools to be awarded approval from the Department for Transport for their School Travel Plans.

The money goes to Fair Field Junior School in Radlett, The Lea Primary School in Harpenden and London Colney Nursery School, along with Marlborough School, Watling View School and The Abbey Primary School in St Albans.

The money can be spent on anything that reduces the use of cars such as bike racks and parent waiting shelters.

More than 400 schools out of nearly 600 in the county have approved travel plans which have involved ideas such as consulting with pupil councils, introducing incentives for walking to school once a week and special breakfasts for pupils who cycle to school.

Herts County Councillor Stuart Pile, the executive member for highways, transport and rural affairs, said: "By setting up various innovative sustainable travel initiatives, the schools are playing an important part in reducing congestion and pollution around the school gates, as well as encouraging their pupils to be fitter and healthier."

Free action days for schools without Travel Plans are being held on October 15 and 21 and for more information contact the School Travel Plan team on 01992 556251.
