A SCHOOL'S success in teaching GCSE English is being highlighted on a TV cable and satellite channel next week.

At 10am on Tuesday, Teacher's TV is broadcasting a programme made at Sir John Lawes School in Harpenden entitled Improving Core GCSE Results in English.

It focuses on the innovative and successful methods employed at the school over the past decade and is expected to be repeated after its first outing.

Head teacher Claire Robins said: "The reason we were chosen is because last year we were ranked in the top 13 most improved schools in the country. Over the last 10 years our GCSE results in English have risen continuously to 89 per cent A* to C grade passes and Teacher's TV were particularly interested in the fact that we have no gap in achievement between boys and girls.

Head of English, Gweiryyd Williams, added: "We have a fantastically-innovative and hard-working staff team. In the programme, one of our teachers conducts part of the lesson with the students sitting under their desks to experience a little of the space available to slaves as they were transported to the New World.

"It has been lots of variety in course delivery, as well as teaching some single-sex groups, that have led to this welcome recognition.
