CHILDREN at a village school have been put at risk for the third time in as many years after its security fencing was stolen.

The fence at St Luke's Special School in Crouch Hall Lane, Redbourn, borders a public right of way that passes through its playing fields and is in place to ensure the safety and security of its students.

The latest theft involved an 80-foot roll of welded mesh being clipped with wire cutters and taken away by thieves.

School manager Helen Harding said: "I am surprised and disppointed that anyone would steal a section of mesh fencing. This mindless theft is putting our children at risk. Without the fencing they are able to leave the premises with the immediate danger of the M1 very close by.

"It is also very frustrating for the school as its insurance will not cover replacement of fencing which will cost around £500 this time."

The school also suffered a series of vandal attacks during the holidays when four windows worth between £200 and £400 were smashed.

A police spokesman said a Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) already patrolled the site on a regular basis but the visits were to be stepped up to try to prevent future incidents.
