FATHER Christmas and hundreds of green-fingered volunteers picked up a shovel and helped to plant the latest batch of trees at Heartwood Forest in Sandridge.

During the day more than 5,000 trees were planted which has enabled the Woodland Trust to move one step closer to their challenge of introducing 85,000 new trees to the forest this winter.

Louise Neicho, Woodland Trust site manager, said: “We were delighted to see so many people turn up to help us plant more trees, especially Santa Claus finding the time to make a quick stop.

“We’ve planted well over 300,000 trees now and even in just three years of planting it has made a real difference for wildlife.”
